The Wombats 2022

Matthew Murphy, Dan Haggis, and Tord Overland-Knudson formed The Wombats in 2003. After meeting at the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts, they began playing music together and produced their 2006 debut single, “Girls, Boys, and Marsupials”. After producing a few more singles, The Wombats came out with a full debut album in 2007: A Guide to Love, Loss, and Desperation. Although they were having fun experimenting with their style, sound, and audience, the band did not find commercial success until they released their third album, Glitterbug, in 2015. Glitterbug earned the most successful attention from the U.K, Australia, and the United States. After a few more years of steady practice and a few more charismatic singles, The Wombats released Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, which put them on the Billboard 200 in 2018.Read More ...

What is Special about The Wombats?

The Wombats are rule-breakers and storytellers, and their lyrics are packed with life. They allow different forms of liberating visions to take flight in their listeners’ minds, and many of their song titles are stories in their own. Their song titles are ridden with should-nots and odd comparisons, and they make sure to provide a rowdy mix of music and showmanship to accompany their bold titles. “Party in a Forest (Where’s Laura?)”, “Kill the Director”, and “Lemon to a Knife Fight” are only a few of their perplexing titles to name, and the only way to receive an explanation for the song titles is to listen to the lyrics or attend a show.

    Notable Performances by The Wombats

The Wombats gained widespread attention with their Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life tour. According to CUIndependent, The Wombats appeared onstage dressed in graphic T-shirts and denim, complete with complimentary sparkly drum sets and floral-print guitars. Interactive lights and fog complimented the scene as they released their freshly-made fourth album into the air for their fans. The band is still just comprised of the original three men who met at The Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts, and fans report that their chemistry and energy on-stage is in sync and artistically sound. It’s a usual occurrence for rowdy fans to show up in wombat costumes to add to the band’s unique lyricism and pizazz, and at times fans get onstage, or dive off. The Wombats are laid-back, humorously-charged showmen who deliver their lyrics as compelling stories that invite carnivalesque audiences.
