Twenty One Pilots Notable Performances
Much of Twenty One Pilots’ fame can be attributed to their avid and consistent touring from their beginning. Through their self-produced efforts and touring, they became a local phenomenon in the Columbus area. When they began performing, the band’s founder Tyler Joseph had his mother hand out show tickets outside Ohio State University.
They participated in the “Battle of the Band” contests at The Arosa Villa and The Basement, prominent Columbus venues, and placed well. After signing with Fueled by Ramen, the duo went on tour as the opening act, alongside Panic! at the Disco, for Fall Out Boy.
Twenty One Pilots have also performed live on Conan, at the mtvU Woodie Awards, at the MTV Movie Awards, on Late Night with Seth Myers, and a number of festivals ranging from Lollapalooza to Firefly. Their first headlining tour, the Quiet Is Violent World Tour, took place in 2014. In 2015, they began their Blurry face tour in Glasgow Scotland. The tour featured Echosmith and Finish Ticket, and was widely attended. They continue to tour around the world, where they use their audience drawing social-media-creativity to maintain excitement and anticipation among music lovers.

Twenty One Pilot’s musical style is often described as a combination of the hip-hop, electropop, indie pop, rock, reggae, electronica, and psychedelic genres. The duo, instrumentally, plays a mix of piano, keyboard, drums, bass, and sometimes ukelele, guitar, and trumpet. Tyler Joseph’s rapping has often been compared to the style of Macklemore, but the journalist Carl Wilson has stated, “[he is] among the ranks of post-Eminem white rappers, [and] I find Joseph more probing, sardonic, and expressive.”
The band has continually found itself ranked highly among the American peanut gallery. They are the third rock act to have two singles simultaneously chart in top five of the Billboard Hot 100, after OutKast and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. In 2016 they were the featured musical guest on Saturday Night Life. They performed a medley of “Heathens” and “Stressed Out” on the American Music Awards of 2016. They also contributed to the My Chemical Romance tribute album Rock Sound Presents: The Black Parade.
