Beck 2021

Beck Hansen, born as Bek David Campbell in 1970, is an American Musician most commonly referred to by his stage name, Beck. The origin of Beck’s experimental and genre-defying style began on the buses of Los Angeles, where Beck grew up. He would sit on the bus with his guitar playing Mississippi blues. When passengers would yell at him to stop playing, Beck responded by coming up with impromptu lyrics to accompany his folk guitar picking all Mississippi John Hurt. The streets of eighties LA, resounding with Latin and emerging hip hop music, influenced Beck as well, who as the only white kid in his class, learned to break dance in middle school.Read More ...

  1. When Beck returned to LA he began to play “strange folk songs” at coffee houses and eventually got picked up by Bong Load Custom Records. In 1992 he recorded the pseudo hip hop track “Loser” in the home of Rap-A-Lot Records producer, Carl Stephenson. the song became an overnight success, taking Beck from a rat-infested shack to the subject of a bidding war which involved Warner Bros and Capitol Records. Without his consent, Beck was dubbed the figurehead of Generation X’s “slacker movement” following the release of “Loser”. “Loser” set the blueprint for Beck’s signature lo-fi recording style.

At first, Beck could not believe his success and felt doomed to one-hit-wonder status. He played disdainfully for audiences, changing the tune and words to his single, “Loser”. Nevertheless Beck had gained the admiration of contemporaries such as Tom Petty and Johnny Cash. Throughout the rest of the nineties, Beck continued to experiment with the blending of folk, rock, and hip hop music. Beck collaborated with the Beastie Boys producer, the Dust Brothers for his 1996 album Odelay. In 1997 Beck won Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the Grammys for “Where It’s At” a track from Odelay. Beck began performing on American television live shortly after he received his Grammy nominations, a habit he continues.
