Originally the band was a solo project created by Ben Gibbard. Gibbard was a guitarist for a band called Pinwheel when he released a cassette under Death Cab for Cutie. It was quite successful so he decided to expand his project. Initially, a lot of their music fared quite well with the independent scene. In fact, by the year 2000, they had singles appearing on the famous television show The O.C.
In 2003, the band released an album called Transatlanticism. This was the album that broke Death Cab for Cutie’s name into the mainstream audience. The album had many singles that were constantly played on the radio. It has been certified gold by the RIAA. Furthermore, it is their most critically acclaimed album too and this album is constantly cited as one of the great rock albums ever made. Their next releases were beloved by critics and fans too. These accomplishments pushed the band into one of the faces of alternative rock in the early 2000s.
Less hardcore fans remember Death Cab for Cutie for their singles because many tv shows and movies like to use their songs in their soundtracks. Some of the most famous examples are The O.C., Six Feet Under, CSI: Miami, Wedding Crashers and Easy A. They have also collaborated with different musicians such as Lauren Mayberry, the lead singer of the Scottish band Chvrches.
