The BYU Cougars have a rich football tradition that goes back years. And that tradition has been built through the years with some classic moments. There was the 1980 Holiday Bowl shootout with SMU when the Cougars, down 20 midway through the 4th quarter, scored 21 unanswered points. The last of those points came on the game’s final play when Jim McMahon’s hail mary was caught by Clay Brown to give BYU a 46-45 victory. There was the 1984 Holiday Bowl with Michigan. That 24-17 victory over the Wolverines secured the 1984 National Championship for the Cougars. And then there was the 1990 season opener against defending national champion Miami. Eventual Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer threw for 406 yards to lead the Cougars over the top-ranked Hurricanes 28-21.
