The simple premise of a ball and two goals means games can spring up almost anywhere. Unlike other sports that require a lot of equipment, soccer can be played with just a ball and some open space.
The modern game traces its roots to the mid-1860s when the Football Association in England created the “Laws of the Game” used to officiate the game. It features 11 players on each team and a field (pitch) with goals at both ends, and a set of rules to govern gameplay. The laws made the game universal, so players in England were playing the same game as players in Brazil. Not long after, professional soccer leagues began popping up left and right. Players all over the world developed their skills.
By 1904, soccer was an Olympic sport, and in 1930, the first international “World Cup” was held in Uruguay. Today, the FIFA World Cup is the largest international competition in association football. Since it’s only played every four years, athletes play in professional leagues across the world like the Bundesliga, English Premier League, and Major League Soccer., National teams play in exhibition matches called “Friendlies” against other national teams to stay sharp as a squad.
