Creation of the Show
The creation of Hadestown has an interesting history. It first began as a DIY theater project by Anaïs Mitchell who wrote and produced several productions in her home of Vermont in 2006-2007. In 2010, she went on to record an album of the folk-opera. From 2012-2016, Mitchell began to transition the album into a stage musical which required writing fifteen more songs and connecting with Rachel Chavkin – Tony nominee director of Great Comet, who would later direct the production.
In 2016, the theater version of Hadestown performed at the New York Theatre Workshop, and its run was extended due to popular demand. The performance led to several Outer Circle Critics and Lucille Lortel Awards nominations. It then also had runs at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and at the Royal National Theatre in London, England. After beginning as a community theater and then becoming a popular album, Hadestown will be debuting on Broadway for the first time in April 2019.
What Makes it Special
Blending about 30 musical numbers of varying levels of reflective beauty or riotous fun, this musical brings to life the passion of the love of Orpheus and Eurydice, one of history’s most famous mythical couples. The moving, acoustic “Wedding Song” Orpheus sings and plays on guitar to propose to Eurydice brings audiences to the brink of joyous tears while witnessing the promise and hope of budding true love. The jazzy, swinging “Our Lady of the Underground” is sultry and captivating. “Way Down Hadestown” makes you feel like you are in the middle of a party in an otherworldly 1930’s big band city.
In addition to great music, the show is artfully crafted to get the audience pondering the meaning of having the support of loved ones. An integral part of the Orpheus myth is that he has to walk in darkness without knowing if Eurydice is following him. Director Rachel Chavkin says that “[This show] linked up the individual journey of terror of walking alone with the larger political implications of a society that doesn’t have solidarity [and] trumpets the idea that if we are walking arm in arm if we can walk together, we can make it across the threshold”. At the end of the show, you will be inspired to appreciate and support those you care about and who are in turn always there for you.
