Tootsie 2020

Tootsie is the exciting new musical production based on the 1982 film of the same name starring Dustin Hoffman. Though director Scott Ellis assures audiences, “This…is one hundred percent not your grandfather’s ‘Tootsie,’” you can rest assured that the hilarious story from the film maintains its punch.

The drama follows Michael, a prickly Broadway actor who has burned so many bridges that he can longer get hired. In desperation, he poses as a woman for a role and gets the job. This quickly leads to fame as well as a series of uproarious misunderstandings with all the wrong people in love with all the wrong versions of each other. Hijinks naturally ensue.Read More ...

    Differences from the Film

Set in modern-day rather than in 1982, the writers of the musical strove to make this production accessible to a contemporary audience, especially in an age where gender fluidity is common, and cross-dressing isn’t a simple grasp at laughs. They did this by flipping the narrative – in the film, the story was a lesson about what women endure from men, but Variety explains that the musical version is, “a nearly full-on satirical take on the narcissistic male ego.” Addressing themes like “mansplaining” and focusing on the sexism within stories like Romeo and Juliet, this is an upbeat, side-splitting eye-opener about undeserved confidence based on gender.

    Critical Acclaim

Debuting on Broadway in April 2019, previews for the show have garnered enthusiastically positive reviews. Variety writes that the show has “a vibrant musical-comedy zeal” and the Broadway Journal called it a “successful crowd pleaser”. Time Out Chicago calls it “nothing less than a delight” even after addressing the rather daring content in such a different age from which the original film was produced.

Audiences treated to the preview show raved about the fun choreography (by Denis Jones), the sublime acting, and the overall feel-good vibe of the show. If one stops to think about how the female characters still seem to only exist to support “a guy who is a jerk at the outset and a bit less of a jerk in the final scene” (The Chicago Sun Times), you might like it less. But most audiences and critics came away claiming an extremely enjoyable experience, nonetheless.

    Seating Recommendations

Tootsie performances take place in the beautiful Marquis Theatre which is housed inside of the Marriott Marquis Hotel – one of the loveliest hotels in New York’s Theater District.

Though the views throughout the theater are great, for the very best seats in the house, reserve the middle seats of the Orchestra section or the front-most seats in the Mezzanine.

If you want the best views at the best price point, however, check out the Rear Orchestra section or the Front Mezzanine section.

Finally, though, during the 2 hour 35 minute show many people’s main priority is the ability to stretch out. Therefore, for the best legroom, reserve in Row A of the Orchestra, Row A of the Mezzanine, or any aisle seats.
