Critical Acclaim
Since its premiere in Cambridge in 2015, this show has been charming audiences around the world. It made its way to Broadway by 2016 and has also done runs on a U.S. national tour, in the Philippines, and Australia.
In 2016, it was nominated for four Tony Awards and in 2017 for the Best Musical Theater Album Grammy.
Critics appreciated the show’s delicate balance of addressing challenging subjects such as domestic violence without letting the show get overly dark nor unrealistically saccharine. Time Out New York said “…Waitress has an excellent ratio of sweet to tart; supporting characters who provide crustiness ([the] grumbly store owner) and flakiness ([the] loony admirer of another waitress); and cooked-to-perfection staging by Diane Paulus. The whole dish is—please forgive me—love at first bite.” The Hollywood Reporter cheered “…the material is anchored at every step by Bareilles’ melodious pop score and Mueller’s supremely natural performance as Jenna. While the stock characters that surround her may be familiar, they’re a winsome bunch played by sterling performers…”
Good for the Whole Family?
This show, centering on an unexpected pregnancy, expectedly has a fair amount of cursing as well as references to “how babies are made”. For anyone not ready to have that talk with young children, it might be best to leave them at home.
Seating Recommendations
Waitress performances take place in the historic Brooks Atkinson Theatre which, as of recently, displays the beautiful original 1926 chandelier that was taken down for several decades.
For the best views with the best price point, consider purchasing middle seats in Orchestra section Rows E-J or Mezzanine C-D. For the best seats, period, reserve seats 106-108 in Row AAA or Mezzanine seats 106-109 in Rows A-B.
As always, in these older theaters, there is a conspicuous lack of legroom, so if you need to prioritize that, look into corner seats and Row A in Orchestra, Mezzanine or Rear Mezzanine sections.
